New Amsterdam, is located 62 miles from the Guyanese capital Georgetown in the East Berbice-Corentyne region. It has an estimated population of around 33,000 people. It is immediately south of the Canje River and located 4 miles upstream from the mouth of the Berbice River in the Atlantic Ocean.
New Amsterdam has many old colonial buildings as well as a government hospital. It serves as a port. One point of interest is the National Heritage Site Mission Chapel.
